Bechtol, Arthur - From The Coshocton Tribune 22 August 1936 (Saturday) - A. N. Bechtol, County Employee, Former Newspaperman, Dies, Result of Auto Crash Injuries. Arthur Nathaniel Bechtol, 44, former city editor of the tribune, and in recent years, juvenile officer of the probate court, died suddenly at his home, Poplar and South 8th sts., in the early hours of Saturday morning. Embolism, a blood clot reaching the heart, was the cause of death given by the attending physicians. Exact time of Mr. Bechtol’s death is unknown, his body being found by his wife, Mrs. Marjorie Bechtol, shortly after 3 am. Death was instantaneous, physicians said. Severely injured in an automobile accident Aug 14, Mr. Bechtol had been confined to his home until Friday, when he was permitted to leave his bed long enough to go to the doctor's office. He had seemed to be rapidly improving. Friday night he became delirious again, and it was necessary for the attending physician to administer sedatives. Some time during the night, he awakened and drank nearly all of a bottle of nerve medicine left by the doctor. The medicine, however, was harmless, the doctor said, and had nothing to do with his death. Born at Keene, Nov. 21, 1894, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Bechtol, Arthur received an education in local schools, graduating from Nellie high school. After his graduation, he attended the Meredith Business College at Zanesville, O, and later a business college at Pittsburgh. Interested in newspaper work, he returned to Coshocton and became a reporter on the Times-Age. His adeptness at the work soon became recognized and he went to the Tri-State News Bureau at Pittsburgh where he worked until America entered the World war. Called into service, Mr. Bechtol served 19 months with the army as sergeant first class before receiving his honorable discharge. Following his army service, Mr. Bechtol returned to the Tri-State News Bureau and remained there until 1921. On Jan 3, 1921 he was united in marriage with Miss Marjorie Martter at Salt Lake City Utah, and the next year was spent in Tulare Calif., where he was city editor of a newspaper. A year of free lance work followed this position, and then Mr. Bechtol returned east to become assistant city editor of The Tribune. A short time after his return, Floyd Norman, city editor of The Tribune, retired and from then until 1928, Mr. Bechtol guided the news desk of The Tribune as city editor. He served as city editor of papers at Ludington, Mich. and Bridgeport Conn., after leaving Coshocton and returned to Ohio in the spring of 1931 to become a copy reader on The Cleveland News. A breakdown in health forced his resignation and he returned to Coshocton Sept. 1, 1931, resting until February 1932, when he became probation officer of the juvenile court, a position he had held since. Children of Coshocton County today are mourning a friend. While newspapermen and business associates held Mr. Bechtol in high esteem, it was to the children of the county that his death came as the greatest tragedy today. In his work as juvenile officer he had displayed an understanding of children and sympathy with the under-privileged that brought him their love and trust. The father, W. W. Bechtol and the widow, of the home, are the only surviving relatives of the immediate family. His mother preceded him in death Oct. 9. 1903, and his brother Harold E. Bechtol, famous Cleveland Newspaperman, died in March 1922, He was a member of the American Legion and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral arrangements had not been completed at noon today. - Submitted by:Kelly ImKellybar@aol.com
