Early Coshocton Newspaper Obituaries - 1859

By Norma Karter

Progressive Age Jan 26, 1859, Wednesday
We regret to learn the demise of Mrs. Nicholas RECTOR of Warsaw. We have long known Mrs. R. and can testify to her worth as a kind and affectionate wife and mother, true friend and good neighbor. We can scarcely realize that she is dead. Peace to her ashes. Her funeral will take place at 12 M today at the Coshocton burying ground.

Daniel NORMON was born in Hampshire Co., Va, December 5th, 1787. When 15 years of age his parents came to Coshocton Co. and settled on the Prairie. Here he grew up to manhood under the fostering care of Christian parents, who early taught him to fear God. In 1809 he was married to Miss Susannah BURRELL Maryland. In 1812, he removed the Prairie to his farm in Keene township where he spent the last 40 years of his life contributing by word and deed to the advancement of the cause of Christ and the interests of his own neighborhood. In 1847, the companion of his youth was taken away by the band of death. He soon after mourned again and left his farm and removed to the village of Keene, where after a protracted illness of three months on the 5th of February, 1859 he breathed his last. His age was little rising 72 years – He possessed the power and purpose of an untiring worker. At seventy years of age his step was quick and elastic as youth. And, abating a little dizziness of the eye, he retained to the surprising degree the vigor of life; especially since he was not one who had sought or even preferred the smooth and easy side of life’s highway. As a citizen he was high minded and honorable, infinitely elevated above the law and vulgar trickery of base man. Some men may have possessed more of the outward blandishments of friendship, but few men possessed more eminently than he the true heart of a true friend. He had little or no excitement of political or public life but chose rather the narrower but more satisfactory communion of few intimate friends. In early life he was fond of pleasure. He was by nature possessed of a cheerful spirit, and his ready wit and humor, his great fun of anecdotes, and his apt manner of telling them, always made him an agreeable companion when it was proper to use his freedom. His intellect was active, his judgment clear and sound, and his counsel was always judicious and safe. As a Christian he was earnestly constant and faithful. Though not boisterous or showy, yet the falling tear, the tremulous words, the close attention all showed that religion exerted a deep and commanding influence over his heart and experience – For 44 years his love for the Church of God had suffered no abalement. He loved, honored and entertained its ministers, supported its institutions, assisted in its government, and mingled in its devotions. He leaves behind an affectionate companion and four children to mourn his departure. Mar as they all follow him as he followed Christ and finally be so happy as all to meet again in the Kingdom of Heaven.

The remains of Mrs. Clary DEWEY, ??? (can’t read) of Mr. David MARSH formerly of this place were brought here for interment on Wednesday last. The deceased had many devoted friends in this vicinity who sincerely regret her early demise.

In this city, March 1st of dropsy on the brain, George Elder, son of George and Sarah A. DEWEY (Cedar Valley Iowa Times). This is the third child our afflicted friends have lost in a very few months. They have our sympathies. (Note from transcriber: George Dewey married Sallie A. Elder August 19, 1851 in Coshocton Co.)

April 27, 1859 Mr. John MILLER a most exemplary and worthy citizen of this county, residing about four miles east of this place was accidentally killed yesterday afternoon after the following circumstances as we learn them. He was engaged in driving some cattle from the railroad track to keep them from being injured by the lightening train, which he heard coming. He had succeeded in getting the cattle from the track, but the train caused a stampede among them, they forced him upon the track and the train ran over him cutting off both legs and killing him instantly. We are not apprised that any blame is attached to the officers of the train. Mr. Miller was a native of Virginia but has resided in this county for 18 to 20 years last past. He leaves a large family and many warm friends to mourn his sad fate. Truly, “in the midst of life we are in death”.

We are pained to report the death of Horace GOODELL, a resident of Coalport of this county. Mr. G. died at Dresden, we understand on Monday last. He leaves a wife and family to mourn his loss.( see article from County Democrat June 15, 1859))

Coshocton County Democrat June 15, 1859, Wednesday
Wrongly informed, Mr. GOODELL is not dead; neither has he been sick at his place. His sickness was at Newark, which was serious but not fatal. We are told that he has been removed to his home and is convalescent. (Dresden Intelligencer) The readers of the [Progressive] Age are often led astray by the editor who sometimes goes off “half-cocked”.

Progressive Age June 22, 1859, Wednesday
Mrs. WOLF, wife of George WOLF of Keene township of this county died on Monday last of consumption. Her remains were yesterday followed to the Coshocton by an unusually large concourse of people. Thus the early setters of the county are passing away.

Modest and retiring in his habits—strictly honest in all his dealings—he was beloved by all who had the pleasure of this acquaintance.

David BONNETT is dead. We are pained to record the death of an esteemed friend and fellow-citizen David BONNETT of Warsaw – who died last Tuesday of lung fever. He was a good man, a most estimable citizen, and has been taken away in the prime of this life, and in the height of his usefulness. He leaves an interesting family, and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his death.

Progressive Age December 21, 1859, Wednesday
Died at the residence of Robert LONG, Esq. in Millersburg of consumption on Sunday last, Mr. John C. LONG, son of the late Maj. William LONG of Warsaw in the 23rd year of is age. It is a melancholy pleasure to render a slight tribute to the memory of those we loved in life and remember with fond regret, in death. Mr. LONG was raised in this county and has numerous ardent friends whose hearts will be touched at his early exit from the scenes of earth. He was among the most promising young men – highly intellectual, and with a heart at all times warm and generous. He was a graduate of the Cincinnati Medical College and his friends fondly hoped for him a long and useful career. It has been otherwise ordered – we all trust for the best.
